Everywhere that water exists, microorganisms are sure to follow. Microorganisms can be a significant nuisance in the upstream Oil & Gas sector. Well drilling, completion, stimulation and water flood operations can introduce microbes into a producing formation and cause plugging. Microbes found in the near well bore of producing wells can impede inflow, corrode infrastructure and sour the formation. At the surface, production problems associated with microbial infection include corrosion and fouling of wellheads, pipelines, separators and storage tanks.
There are a number of monitoring methods widely in use, ranging from traditional culturing techniques, through to DNA targeting and rapid molecular reaction methods. All of the methods have their own merits and limitations, which is why a combination of monitoring tools are normally applied in the quantification of bio burden and resulting mitigation programs.
